First constructed in 1645, the Saint John’s Parish church is one of the oldest churches in Barbados. Originally made of wood, it was destroyed in 1660 and was rebuilt in stone in 1836. Sadly in 1675 the then new church was struck by a hurricane and badly damaged. The remaining structure was then completely torn down by 1676. Tragedy struck again when it was again destroyed by another hurricane. The church was then rebuilt in 1836 and was rededicated on 23rd June. This is part of the existing structure we see today, with the chapel and the stain glass being added some years after its rededication.
